Funnel.

In a nutshell

A funnel describes the stages through which people who first become aware of you turn into prospects, inquiries, and ultimately customers.

"Funnel" is the English word for "trichter." The concept behind it is this: Many people enter at the top—those who are encountering your company for the first time—but significantly fewer emerge at the bottom as customers. In between are stages where people drop off. This model is useful for a business because it shows where leads are lost and which advertising is intended for which stage. A sales funnel or marketing funnel refers to the same concept but with a slightly different focus.

How a Funnel Works

Most models use four stages: awareness, interest, decision, and action. There is no fixed standard; each industry structures these stages slightly differently. Meta reflects this logic in its advertising objectives. According to Meta, there are six objectives to choose from in Ads Manager: brand awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion, and revenue. Meta itself explains that campaigns often focus on brand awareness and new customers at the beginning and later on purchases or sign-ups.

Here’s a simple example for a painting company: A meta ad featuring a short before-and-after video reaches homeowners in the surrounding area. A second ad leads to the “Painting the Exterior” page, which includes a price example and a short form. Visitors to the page who haven’t submitted an inquiry will see a reminder via a target audience created by the Meta Pixel. At the bottom of the funnel are callbacks, on-site appointments, and quotes.

What Your Business Should Keep in Mind

Track every step, not just the end. According to Google, in Google Analytics 4, you can use exploratory funnel analysis to define up to ten steps and see how many users complete each one. This lets you see whether people drop off after the ad, on the page, or in the form.

Start with the biggest drop-off point. In projects, we often see that the biggest loss isn't in advertising, but between the page load and the submission of the form. Increasing the budget won't help there, but improving the conversion rate will make an immediate difference.

Tailor the message to the stage. People who don't know you yet rarely fill out a long form right away. At the top of the funnel, trust and a clear offer are key; at the bottom, a simple next step.

Think through the funnel after receiving an inquiry. A quick response, a clear quote, and follow-up are key to turning an inquiry into an order.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Funnel

What is the difference between a funnel and a customer journey? A funnel looks at the stages from the company's perspective and simplifies them considerably. A customer journey describes the path from the customer's perspective, including all touchpoints, and that path is rarely a straight line.

As a small business, do I need a sales funnel? You already have one, even if you've never called it that. The only question is whether you know at which stage your prospects are falling through the cracks.

What do "open" and "closed" funnels mean in Google Analytics? According to Google, users can enter an open funnel at any stage. In a closed funnel, they are only counted if they have completed the first step.
