UX Design.

In a nutshell

UX design is about shaping the entire experience people have with a product, a website, or a company—not just the interface.

UX Design stands for User Experience Design—in other words, the design of the user experience. According to Don Norman and Jakob Nielsen of the Nielsen Norman Group, user experience encompasses all aspects of end users’ interactions with a company, its services, and its products. For your website, this means it’s not just about how it looks, but whether visitors can quickly find what they’re looking for, understand what you offer, and get in touch without any obstacles.

How UX Design Works

UX design starts with your visitors’ tasks, not with the layout. First, you determine who visits the site and what these people want to accomplish—such as getting a price estimate, requesting an appointment, or checking whether you serve their area. Then you organize the content, navigation, and forms so that these specific tasks are easy to complete. Only then do you move on to the detailed design.

Two terms are often confused. According to the Nielsen Norman Group, the user interface (UI) is only one part of the user experience. Usability is a quality attribute that describes how easy something is to use. UX is the broader framework that also includes the phone call, the offer, and the response to an inquiry. For those who need to follow standards: Human-centered design is described in ISO 9241-210.

What Your Business Should Keep in Mind

Right at the top, say what you do and where. A headline like “Bathroom Renovations in Hürth and Cologne” is more helpful to visitors than “Welcome to Our Website.” Read through your homepage as if you didn’t know the business.

Make phone numbers and contact information easily accessible on your cell phone with your thumb. When you're on the go, you don't want to have to scroll through three sections just to make a call.

Test with real people. Give someone who isn't familiar with your business a task, such as "Find out if the business also offers maintenance services," and observe without offering any help. Where they get stuck is where you should focus your next improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions About UX Design

What is the difference between UX and UI? UI is the visible interface with buttons, colors, and fonts. According to the Nielsen Norman Group, UX encompasses the entire interaction with your company; the interface is only one part of it.

Is good UX design time-consuming? Not necessarily. Many improvements involve text and layout—such as a clearer heading, a shorter form, or a more visible phone button.

How can I tell if UX design is effective? By seeing more inquiries with the same number of visitors—in other words, by a rising conversion rate. Good Core Web Vitals are also part of the user experience.
